Brahman Guak was fascinated by classic music when he was in university and it brought him to classic guitar club. He was not only interested in playing the instrument, but also making his own instrument. His fascination and curiosity of guitar drew him to look for works which he could learn guitar building after university graduation. He entered guitar factory in 1986 and worked hard for 4 years to attain dream for lutherie. He also learned violin building for 1 year to understand structure of string instruments.
He opened his own workshop in 1990 to make his own guitar. However, it was not easy to make fine guitar as he planned. He invited Robert Ruck, one of legendary American luthier, in 1992 to his workshop and learned construction method and skills. He also invited Thomas Humprey, another legendary American luthier to his workshop in the same year and got personal guitar building lesson. He was influenced by the uniformity and precision of their craftsmanship.
Even if he ran guitar shops making both of factory level guitar and concert level guitar both from 1990 to 1999, he had never abandoned dream to become world class master.
He stopped making factory level guitar in 2000 and, since then, he only concentrated on concert level guitar. His top model “Brahman” guitar was firstly introduced to the world in 2000. “Brahman” is philosophical terms which mean everything combining happiness and unhappiness, hope and frustration, and sweetness and bitterness. He wants to put every sound into his guitar entailing universe, so he named his top model guitar “Brahman”. Brahman guitar became one of the best guitars that Korean professional guitar musicians want to play in concert. Jang Dae Kun, worldly renowned classic guitarist, used Brahman guitar to record album. Bae Jang Heum and Hong Sang Ki who are also poplar Korean guitarist also used Brahman for their album recording.
He kept seeking guitar building mentorship even after he was regarded to be a top builder in Korea. So he visited many European countries to meet world legendary luthiers. He visited Hernandez, Hauser, Daniel Friederich, Gabriel Jr Fleta, Hauser II, and Dominique Field. He visited other contemporary masters in Japan, China, Brazil, and Argentina.
The experience to meet such great masters not only inspired the artistic design of his own guitars but also taught him how to build fine instruments that create remarkable sound. But most of all, the discussion with them has been driving force in defining his own style and own voice.
During 27 years of guitar building career, he has done lots of activities to organize guitar festivals, guitar music concerts, and guitar building master class. He tried to present guitar music and instrument to people through concert and festival. He opened guitar building master class of Marvi, Hauser Ⅱ, and Arturo Sanzano which other Korean maker attended to learn fine guitar building. However, most of all, he himself benefited from these activities because he could improve quality of his own guitar with accumulation of understanding of sound, wood tonal possibilities, and fine craftsmanship. He applies his own experience to every instrument he builds.
He thinks that the first and the most important step to make fine instruments are choice of tone woods. So he always selects best woods and makes them seasoned naturally in a very long time. He never uses wood materials that are seasoned for less than 10 years. Whenever he visited European masters, he bought woods that had stored and seasoned over 30 years. He even went to Brazil to get Brazilian rosewoods.
He likes to make multi-string instruments like 7, 8, and 10 string guitar. And special model like cantilever rising board guitar and cedar-spruce-mixed top guitar are also his favorite masterpiece.
His instruments are so internationally popular that customers wait years for them. His instruments are currently being played by some of the world's leading concert artists including Evgeny Yulievich Finkelstein, Aleksei Sokolov, Grigory Baranov from Russia, Remi Jousselme from France, and Samantha Wells from Italia.
His guitars have enormous dynamic range and tremendous power. The tone is very clear (counterpoint is an important concept for him) and yet very sweet and lyrical. The quality of sound, ease of playability and physical beauty have made his guitars extremely desirable to performers and collectors everywhere. According to expression on official webpage of Italian guitar musician Samantha Wells, Brahman is very powerful and warm without being a double top or having lattice bracings.
One of his guitars characteristics is two button on the bridge like Torres guitar which he commemorate Torres with respect.
